22 Recipes to Cook in 2022 – Editor Picks of our New Recipes for a New Year of Cooking

These 22 recipes to cook in 2022 are editor picks of new recipes for a new year of cooking. These recipes did not make it onto our lists of most popular recipes of last month, last year or the last 12 years of Grantourismo, but they’re some of my favourite recipes that make delicious dishes we think you’ll enjoy.

This compilation of 22 recipes to cook in 2022 are my picks of new recipes for a new year of cooking. They are recipes that may not have made it onto our collections of 12 most popular recipes in 12 years of Grantourismo, the best recipes of 2021, or our most popular recipes of December, but they’re all terrific recipes that I think you should try.

I love doing our end of month reviews, end of year reviews, and all-time reviews when I sit down and spend some time looking at our site to see which recipes our readers searched for, spent most of their time on, and, hopefully, spent time cooking – as well as see which recipes didn’t get as much attention.

Interestingly, some of the recipes I love the most – recipes that we love to cook and eat – don’t always make it onto the most popular recipes lists. Maybe because those dishes weren’t on trend, they’re recipes from lesser-known cuisines that you just weren’t looking for, or, in the case of original recipes we created, you just didn’t know they existed.

I’ve compiled some of those recipes – the newer recipes of the last year or so – into this list of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. These are our editor picks of new recipes for a new year of cooking that we think you’ll enjoy making as much as you’ll enjoy eating. If you do cook any of these, we’d love to know what you think.

Before I share our editor picks of the 22 recipes to cook in 2022, we have a favour to ask. Grantourismo is reader-funded. If you’ve enjoyed our recipes or other content on the site, please consider supporting Grantourismo.

22 Recipes to Cook in 2022 – Editor Picks of our New Recipes for a New Year of Cooking

These are our editor picks of the 22 recipes to cook in 2022 for a new year of cooking.

Chicken Stroganoff Recipe for a Rich, Spicy, Tangy Old Shanghai Style of Stroganoff

My authentic beef Stoganoff recipe and mushroom Stroganoff recipe, both based on my Russian family recipes, are some of the most popular recipes on Grantourismo, and while I do love those recipes, my chicken Stroganoff recipe is one of my favourite recipes and tops this list of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. It’s inspired by what I imagine the old Shanghai-style of Stroganoff might have tasted like. It’s incredibly rich, redolent of spices, and slightly tangy due to the addition of Worcestershire sauce, which was added to beef Stroganoff in the Russian restaurants in Shanghai and Harbin in China in the early 20th century by the Russian émigrés who fled there and opened guesthouses, hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés. It was some of those same Russian immigrants and their descendants who then took beef Stroganoff onto Hong Kong, Australia, North America and beyond.

Burmese Indian Style Chicken Curry Recipe for a Rich Curry Fragrant with Ginger, Turmeric and Garlic

A cousin of the classic Cape Town lamb stew called tomato bredie, one of our all-time top recipes on Grantourismo, our Cape Malay chicken curry recipe, a richly spiced tomato-based curry from South Africa, was one of our best recipes of last year. We learnt to make it in a Cape Malay cooking class (which easily goes down as one of the world’s best cooking classes for us) in colourful Bo-Kaap, the heart of Cape Malay culture in Cape Town over a decade ago. We love it, but we also love this Burmese Indian style chicken curry recipe, which makes a rich curry fragrant with ginger, turmeric, garlic and chilli that has a homemade Burmese curry powder on its concise list of ingredients. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Burmese coconut rice and the refreshing salads of Myanmar that provide contrasting textures and flavours, such as this Burmese raw cabbage salad, and it’s another of our picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022.

Classic Moroccan Chicken Tagine Recipe with Preserved Lemons and Olives

Our lamb tagine with prunes and almonds recipe from Marrakech in Morocco has appeared on our lists of most popular recipes year after year and was also on our list of all-time top recipes in 12 years of Grantourismo. Terence learnt to make it from Jamila, the cook at our Marrakech riad on the 2010 grand tour that launched Grantourismo and it’s a wonderful dish. This Moroccan chicken tagine recipe with preserved lemons and olives is also pretty special. It makes another one of Morocco’s most quintessential tagines and is infused with intense citrus notes, thanks to umami-rich preserved lemons. The comforting Moroccan stew is traditionally eaten with crusty round bread called khobz but it’s also delicious with couscous, just don’t tell your Moroccan friends! While tagines are traditionally made in a tagine pot, a glazed clay base and a large conical lid that’s designed to guide the condensation from cooking back into the pot, you could also use a pressure cooker if you want, as it cuts the simmering time down to about an hour.

Creamy Cambodian Coconut Pineapple Fish Curry Recipe for Samlor Ktis Koh Kong

This Cambodian fish amok recipe for an authentic steamed fish curry made to a classic recipe from an older generation of cooks was third on the list of our most popular recipes in 12 years of Grantourismo and we totally understand why. It’s one of my all-time favourite Cambodian dishes and it’s sublime. It’s also the best-known dish of culinary travellers to Cambodia and the dish they want to cook as soon as they get back home. If you’re a fan I reckon you’ll also love this lesser-known of Cambodian curries, which I’m adding to this list of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. This Cambodian coconut pineapple fish curry recipe makes samlor ktis Koh Kong, a sweet-ish gently spiced curry made with coconut cream, pineapple and baby eggplants from Koh Kong, an island and coastal province in Cambodia’s southwest. A samlor is a soup or stew, but with a spice paste base this is very much a curry. Bonus: it doesn’t need steaming.

Vietnamese Clay Pot Caramelised Fish Recipe with Fresh Turmeric, Fragrant Dill and Peanuts

This easy Vietnamese caramelised fish recipe with fresh turmeric, fragrant dill and peanuts is absolutely delicious and comes together quickly. Our recipe is adapted from a recipe for Vietnamese clay pot fish with fresh dill that we learnt to cook at the Red Bridge Cooking School when we lived in Hoi An in Central Vietnam in 2013. The dish is a combination of two Vietnamese specialties, chả cá lã vọng from the North and cá kho tộ from the South. I’ve given the recipe a few small tweaks but it’s still essentially the same dish. The instructor recommended mackerel, salmon, snapper, sea bass, basa, or catfish, and insisted all would work. I’ve eaten it with trout in Sapa but we make the dish with salmon, because I absolutely adore it, and we use salmon pieces rather than fillets as they work better if you’re planning to serve this with rice or noodles. Try to use sustainable salmon if you can.

Stir Fried Clams Recipe with Spicy Sweet Tamarind Sauce and Aromatic Basil

Cambodian dishes always land on our lists of most popular recipes but this recipe for stir-fried clams with a spicy sweet tamarind sauce and aromatic basil never makes your lists and yet it’s an incredibly delicious dish. The recipe makes ngeav chhar ampil tum, an easy but impressive plate for a casual seafood meal. The addictive tamarind sauce is sweet thanks to ripe tamarind and palm sugar, spicy courtesy of bird’s eye chillies, and fresh basil brings fragrance. And it comes together in minutes. Not a fan of clams? Try pippies or mussels. The tamarind must be what Cambodians call ‘tum’, which means ‘ripe’, to distinguish ripe tamarind from green tamarind or young tamarind, which are fresh and sour respectively. The older ripe tamarind, which is dark brown in colour, is sour and sweet, and the sweetness is enhanced when you add palm sugar. It’s a fantastic dish, which is why it’s on our picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022

Shan Tomato Salad Recipe with Shallots, Sesame and Coriander from Shan State, Myanmar

Hailing from beautiful Shan State in northeastern Myanmar – a fertile region of forested mountains, rolling hills and serene lakes – this Shan tomato salad recipe with shallots, sesame and coriander will make you a sweet tomato salad textured with crunchy purple onions, sesame seeds and crispy fried shallots and garlic, and fragrant fresh coriander. Shan cuisine, like many of Myanmar’s cuisines – and all of the northern Southeast Asian cuisines, in fact – is distinguished by its fantastic salads. Over the years we’ve heard travellers praise the salads but complain about Myanmar’s oily curries, not realising that the salads are accompaniments to those curries, providing a refreshing contrast. It’s mostly made with crunchy green tomatoes, although we’ve also had it with red tomatoes; it’s terrific with either – or both. It can also be enjoyed with steamed rice or eaten as you would any other salad.

Russian Salmon Potato Salad Recipe with Soft-Boiled Eggs, Gherkins, Capers and Dill

Our potato salad recipes are some of our most popular recipes and this Japanese potato salad recipe – which is fantastic with tonkatsu – and this fragrant potato salad recipe with garden peas and herbs and spices both proved very popular with our readers last year. This Russian salmon potato salad recipe is one of my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022 if you love potato salads as much as we do. Made with soft-boiled eggs, capers, gherkins and dill, it makes a filling salad that you can eat year-round. In the cool season, you can serve it with warm potatoes and seared salmon straight from the pan, while it can be refrigerated for warm weather meals, such as summer barbecues and spring picnics. We rarely get caviar here, but if you can, for special occasions, you can jazz it up with some dollops of salmon roe or red lumpfish caviar.

Thai Rad Na Gai Recipe for Charred Rice Noodles with Chicken and Gravy

Our Cambodian mee katang recipe for a Chinese-Cambodian dish of wok-fried wide rice noodles, browned by dark soy sauce, and stir-fried with marinated pork, crunchy carrots, Chinese broccoli, and scrambled eggs was another one of our top recipes of last year. Called ‘mee Kontang’ in Khmer, which means Cantonese noodles, but pronounced ‘mee Ka-tang’, these charred noodles may not be as ubiquitous in Cambodia as noodle soup dishes such as nom banh chok, kuy teav, lort cha, and mee Kola, some of my favourite Southeast Asian noodle dishes, but they’re super popular, a cinch to make and super versatile. I’ve included a recipe for one of the Thai cousins of mee Katang on my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. This Thai rad na gai recipe for charred rice noodles with chicken and gravy makes a Thai-Chinese street food dish that, like Thai pad kra pao, is more popular with Thais than the more famous pad Thai that’s beloved by tourists.

Egg Foo Young with Gravy Recipe for the Chinese American Crispy Omelette That’s a Takeout Favourite

The original Cantonese-style egg foo young – or egg foo yung or egg fu yung or the Cantonese fu yong dan or fuyong dan – a delightfully crispy omelette filled with pork, spring onions and bean sprouts, with provenance in Southern China during the 18th century Ching Dynasty was one of the top recipes of last year. But I also love this recipe for Chinese-American egg foo young which is a popular Chinese restaurant takeout dish of crispy pancake-like omelettes drizzled in gravy. We’ve found that this egg foo young recipe is one that needs practicing so that you know when there is enough structure to the final egg mixture to fold or slice the eggs to finish cooking. Don’t worry, though, even if you overcook the bottom of the dish, it’s still incredibly delicious, making it another one of our top 22 recipes to cook in 2022.

Thai Fried Egg Salad Recipe for Yam Khai Dao, a Deliciously Addictive Crispy Fried Egg Salad

While we’re on the subject of Asian egg dishes, this Thai fried egg salad recipe for yam khai dao makes an addictive salad of crispy fried eggs with sweet tomatoes, purple shallots, crunchy peanuts, fragrant coriander, Chinese celery, chillies, and a salad dressing that’s sour, sweet, tangy, and funky. It’s a salad that’s full of texture and flavour but it’s the dressing that really brings this dish together, so do try to source real palm sugar if you can. It can come crystallised (like brown sugar), but it’s best bought in the form of discs that are often called ‘candy’, although they’re not actually eaten like candy. Fresh limes are best, but you can use bottled lime juice and when it comes to fish sauce, we recommend Megachef fish sauce for Thai food because it has the most consistent salinity levels.

Delicious Eggplant Dip Recipe Inspired by the Classic Sichuanese Braised Eggplant Dish

This delicious eggplant dip recipe takes a classic Sichuanese braised eggplant dish called ‘fish-fragrant eggplant’ and transforms it into an amazing dip to serve as a starter before settling down to a full Sichuanese feast or to snack on with Terence’s spicy Sichuan flavoured sourdough starter discard crackers. He came up with the Sichuan inspired crackers to compliment this dip, so you have the zing of Sichuan peppercorns and the heat of Sichuan chillies. If you love Middle Eastern eggplant or aubergine dips such as mutabal and baba ganoush, then you are going to love this eggplant dip recipe, which is why it’s one of my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022.

Delightful Thai Grilled Eggplant Salad Recipe with Red Shallots, Fragrant Mint and Soft-Boiled Eggs

If you’re a lover of eggplants, you’ll also want to make this Thai grilled eggplant salad recipe for a delightful dish of smoky pieces of creamy eggplant with sweet red shallots, aromatic mint, the umami of fish sauce, a sublime soft-boiled egg, and a kick of chilli. Light, fragrant and flavourful, this salad is best when the eggplant has come straight from the grill or barbecue, and is combined with the other ingredients just before serving. It makes a fantastic side dish, one of an array of dishes if you’re cooking up a Thai feast, or a filling main course if you add a five-minute egg and a bowl of jasmine rice, as we do – which is why it’s another one of my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022.

Mexican Chicken Tinga Taco Recipe with Grilled Corn, Pickled Shallots and Purple Cabbage

Our Mexican recipes, Mexican-American recipes and Tex-Mex recipes are some of the most popular recipes, especially the breakfast eggs recipes, yet this Mexican chicken tinga taco recipe didn’t make your lists of most popular recipes, although it’s one of my favourites. Our easy Mexican chicken tinga taco recipe makes warm soft flour tortillas with delicious Mexican chicken tinga – or tinga de pollo – grilled corn charred on a griddle pan, zingy pickled purple shallots and pickled purple cabbage, sprinkled with crumbly Mexican cotija and aromatic coriander. Douse it all with your favourite Mexican hot sauce and close your eyes and you might just hear mariachis. It’s a feast for the eyes as much as the stomach and will brighten up your lunch or casual dinner.

Russian Cold Beetroot Soup Recipe for Holodnik, A Chilled Soup for a Hot Summer Day

My traditional Russian borscht recipe for a hearty home-cooked soup that my Russian grandmother used to make was another of our most popular recipes of 2021, so I’ve included a recipe for another beetroot soup that you might not know on my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022 and that’s holodnik (Холодник). This chilled cold soup is brilliant on a hot summer day. It’s sometimes called ‘summer borscht’ although that would actually be svekolnik (Свекольник). It shares a key ingredient in beetroot, it’s a breeze to make, and it should be served with sour cream and fresh dill. Another delicious Russian summer soup is okroshka, made with kefir (окрошка с кефиром), which I also suggest you make if you love chilled soups. It’s winter where you are? Just turn up the heating. Or save this until the weather warms up.

Cambodian Rice Soup Recipe with Pork Meatballs for Borbor Sor Using Leftover Rice

This Cambodian chicken rice porridge recipe for borbor sach moan, the Cambodian take on Chinese congee is a classic Cambodian comfort food favourite that is eaten at any time of the day, frequently appears on our lists of most popular recipes. I’m adding this lesser-known but equally comforting Cambodian rice soup recipe to this list of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. Called ‘borbor sor’ or ‘white rice porridge’ in Khmer, it’s made with leftover rice and juicy pork meatballs that are cooked in the congee and it’s one of several ways to make Cambodian congee. You can customise this Cambodian rice soup recipe to your heart’s content. If you’re serving this to guests, make sure to provide plenty of condiments – anything from fish sauce to chilli oil and homemade Sriracha – and lots of garnishes, including fresh fragrant herbs, spring onions or scallions, lime quarters and chillies.

Russian Buckwheat Kasha Recipe with Bacon, Caramelised Onions, Mushrooms and Eggs

Kasha is essentially Russia’s congee, a savoury Russian porridge (kasha) made with buckwheat groats (grechka). This comforting Russian buckwheat kasha recipe with caramelised onions, bacon lardons, pan-fried mushrooms, and soft-boiled eggs is another of my picks of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. It makes my hearty take on my baboushka’s traditional Russian breakfast. Despite the rustic appearance, it is perhaps the least traditional of all my Russian family recipes but it’s one of my favourite buckwheat recipes. I have to confess that of all the traditional Russian breakfasts my baboushka made, kasha was not a favourite. While I happily tucked into Baba’s French toast, blini, potato cakes, and buckwheat pancakes, I politely resisted her offer of kasha if I could without insulting her. It wasn’t until I was a young adult that I finally got kasha and now I can’t get enough of it.

Bacon and Eggs Breakfast Congee Recipe for a Comforting East-West Savoury Rice Porridge

My hearty bacon and eggs breakfast congee recipe makes a comforting east-west savoury rice porridge that’s inspired partly by the classic Australian breakfast of bacon and eggs with sautéed mushrooms, and partly by Chinese and Southeast breakfast porridges with pork and boiled eggs. Breakfast porridges, both savoury and sweet, are, like other rice dishes, eaten right around the world. Porridges are not only made with rice, of course, but with oats, buckwheat, barley, maize, oats, semolina, and so on, however, rice porridges are probably the most widely consumed porridge, eaten everywhere from Europe to the Middle East yet they might just be the most ubiquitous in Asia. One of the things I love about porridges is that they’re not only eaten for breakfast, but for brunch and lunch, a warming winter dinner, a sweet dessert, a late-night supper to stave off a hangover, or when we’re ill. And while I’ve called this a breakfast porridge, you could really tuck into it at any time of the day.

Savoury French Toast Recipe With Pan-Fried Cherry Tomatoes, Feta Cheese and Fresh Herbs

This Russian French toast recipe for grenki for grenki (Гренки) just like my Russian grandmother and mother made was another of our most popular recipes of last year. It makes the Russian take on French toast that’s eaten for breakfast, brunch or dessert. You can serve grenki sweet, with sugar, honey, golden or maple syrup, sour cream, fruit jam or berries – or savoury with sausages, bacon and tomatoes or smoked salmon, and I’m including a savoury French toast on this list of 22 recipes to cook in 2022. This recipe also makes classic French toast – which is essentially fried bread that’s been soaked in a beaten egg and milk mixture – but it’s flavoured with garlic, onion, sea salt, pepper, and a little chilli, and piled with pan-fried cherry tomatoes, feta cheese and fragrant dill. It’s a fabulous weekend breakfast, brunch or lunch dish.

Turkish Poached Eggs Recipe with Garlic Yoghurt and Chilli Oil for Cilbir

Our Turkish scrambled eggs recipe for menemen, which is a highlight of a traditional Turkish breakfast spread from Istanbul to Izmir, was another of our most popular recipes of last year. Served as part of a spread that typically included baskets of Turkish breads, pots of various jams and honeys, dishes of olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, labneh, and white cheese, perhaps a board of local charcuterie and hard cheeses, and eggs, it was a dish we always looked forward to for breakfast in Turkey. As did so many of our readers, we assume. But this Turkish poached eggs recipe for çılbır, pronounced ‘chil-bir’, also makes a scrummy Turkish breakfast or brunch dish of runny eggs immersed in creamy garlic yoghurt, drizzled with buttery chilli oil, and garnished with fragrant fresh dill. A favourite of Ottoman sultans, çılbır can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or a snack, and we highly recommend you try it this year.

Breakfast Salad Recipe with Soft Boiled Eggs, Bacon, Avocado, Sautéed Mushrooms, and Pickles

Our best breakfast salad recipe makes a healthy-ish breakfast salad with soft boiled eggs, avocado, crispy bacon, mushrooms sautéed in the bacon juices, crunchy lettuce, sweet cherry tomatoes, and bright tangy pickles. It’s for those of you who can’t decide between a healthy breakfast or comforting bacon and eggs. And who doesn’t love a deliciously filling breakfast salad? Guilt-free bacon, eggs and mushrooms – and crispy bacon and mushrooms sautéed in bacon juices at that! – lightened up in a fresh fragrant salad, made all the healthier with zingy pickles, which are so good for our gut-health. This recipe might not have made your lists of our most popular recipes but it’s one of my favourites and I highly encourage you to give this a try in 2022.

Cambodian Banana Coconut Tapioca Pudding Recipe with Sesame and Star Anise for Chek Ktis

This banana coconut tapioca pudding recipe makes Cambodia’s chek ktis – chek means banana in Cambodia’s Khmer language, and ktis, or more correctly k’tis or k’tiss, means coconut and covers coconut milk and coconut cream – and it’s a sweet and creamy aromatic dessert of stewed banana in coconut milk and tapioca pearls, that’s perfumed with star anise. Garnish with grated coconut, add a drizzle of coconut cream, and sprinkle with sesame seeds before serving. It’s sweet Cambodia in a bowl and it’s sublime. This mango sago pudding recipe was one of our most popular dessert recipes and while I adore mango, this banana coconut tapioca pudding is pretty special. It makes a deliciously simple yet much loved Cambodia dessert called chek ktis – chek means banana in Cambodia’s Khmer language, and ktis, or more correctly k’tis or k’tiss, means coconut and covers coconut milk and coconut cream. If you love Asian desserts, you’re definitely going to want to make this dessert this year.
