10 Most Popular Recipes of January from Stroganoff to Chicken Stew

This post may contain paid links. If you make a purchase through links on our site, we may earn a commission.

Our round-up of the 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 features a combination of new recipes, such as our chicken cacciatore pasta recipe and our best chicken stew recipe; old recipes, such as our authentic beef Stroganoff recipe; as well as recipe collections, from our 31 recipes to cook in January to our best canned beans recipes.

As regular readers know, I love this time of the month when I sit down and review our stats to see what you searched for on our site and which recipes you spent most of your time on, which we hope were recipes you cooked, or at least bookmarked to cook.

As it appears you enjoy these monthly reviews too – our 10 Most Popular Recipes of December 2022 post was the third most read this month and this series was one of the most popular in 2022 – we’ll be continuing the series in 2023.

Last year I excluded a lot of our decade-old recipes that kept landing on these lists time and time again, such as Terence’s côte de bœuf recipe, which chef Pierre Gagnaire shared with us when we met up with him in Paris in 2010, and Terence’s tomato bredie recipe from Cape Town, and rabo de toro oxtail stew from Jerez, both from that year.

Those older recipes were created for Terence’s series called The Dish, in which he cooked and shared recipes for the quintessential dishes of each of the places we settled into for two weeks at a time on the 2010 yearlong global grand tour that launched Grantourismo. Those recipes land on our annual best recipe lists year after year.

But because this month there’s only one of the older recipes in this list of top 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 – my authentic beef Stroganoff recipe – I thought I’d leave it in. What’s really interesting is that a lot of the most read recipes this month are round-ups of other recipes, so it’s not so much 10 recipes as such but 10 recipe posts, but I’m being pedantic.

Now before I share our 10 most popular recipes of January 2023, the recipes our readers searched for and spent most of their time in January, the recipes that we hope you cooked last month, we have a favour to ask.

Grantourismo is reader-supported. If you’ve cooked our recipes and enjoyed them, please consider supporting Grantourismo by supporting our epic Cambodian cuisine history and cookbook on Patreon, which you can do for as little as the price of a coffee.

Now let me share our 10 most popular recipes of January 2023.

Most Popular Recipes of January 2023 – Here’s What Our Readers Have Been Cooking

Here are the 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 on Grantourismo – the recipes our readers searched for, spent time on, and cooked this month.

31 Recipes to Cook in January – The Winter Edition

Our collection of 31 Recipes to Cook in January, the Winter Edition, was compiled for our readers experiencing a particularly chilly winter in the northern hemisphere, and in need of warming dishes that comfort and nourish.

This compilation topped our list of 10 most popular recipes of January 2023, or rather, recipe posts, as you have 31 recipes in this round-up. Indeed, you have even more than that, because it includes a few recipe collections. Don’t ask me to do that math.

The collection includes everything from spicy Southeast Asian soups and hearty European stews to Australian meat pies inspired by Cambodian curries and Mexican soups, Irish stews, comforting meatballs and filling pastas.

If you don’t find winter cooking inspiration in this round-up, we also have a collection of 31 Winter Recipes to Cook in August, which we shared during the southern hemisphere winter last year, which has 31 completely different winter recipes to this lot.

Chicken Cacciatore Pasta Recipe for Spaghetti Cacciatore for a Retro-Classic from the 1970s

This easy chicken cacciatore pasta recipe makes spaghetti cacciatore – although you could use any pasta you have in the pantry – and it landed at #2 on our list of 10 most popular recipes of January 2023.

Created to use up leftover chicken cacciatore, the hearty chicken pasta is a 1970s retro-classic from the Italian-Australian diaspora that’s completely inauthentic – Italians don’t eat pasta with main course dishes – but it’s deliciously comforting all the same.

This spaghetti cacciatore recipe, like the chicken cacciatore recipe we shared before it, was a result of Terence and I reminiscing in the kitchen over glasses of wine about our Australian childhoods, which inevitably turns to recollections of food memories.

Terence was telling me about an Italian restaurant his parents took the family to when he was a kid that specialised in chicken cacciatore and spaghetti cacciatore so I accepted the challenge of creating the best cacciatore recipes I could. Terence thought I succeeded. Let me know what you think.

10 Most Popular Recipes of December from from Chicken Cacciatore to Beef Kofta

Our 10 most popular recipes of December post landed at #3 on this list of 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 – or rather, recipe posts, but I promised I wouldn’t get pandemic – which is why we decided to continue with this series this year.

My chicken cacciatore recipe topped that list. It was also one of our 22 most popular recipes of 2022, although it didn’t make that list as I shared the recipe a few days after I published the list. Incidentally, this month it was the 11th most visited recipe, just missing out on a spot on this list.

Called pollo alla cacciatora in Italian, which translates to ‘hunter’s chicken’, it’s a rustic old Italian dish traditionally eaten as a main with crusty bread to mop up the sauce (we recommend sourdough), although I also love it with a panzanella and hasselback potatoes or creamy mash.

The December list also included a classic beef kofta recipe for traditional Lebanese kafta – grilled, spiced, ground meat kebabs that are made throughout the Middle East – along with a handful of recipe collections. So, yep, a lot more than 10 recipes on that list too…

Sunday Dinner Ideas for Families – Stroganoff, Cacciatore, Chicken Stew and Lasagne

Our round-up of Sunday dinner ideas for families included everything from my pork Stroganoff recipe made with the Chinese velveting technique to recipes for an old-fashioned chicken stew, an authentic lasagne, and that traditional chicken cacciatore with a luscious tomato sauce.

This compilation of Sunday dinner ideas for families was the latest edition of another fairly random series of best Sunday night dinner ideas – which I publish occasionally on Sunday evenings – and it landed at #4 on our list of 10 most popular recipes of January 2023.

We’ve published all sorts of Sunday dinner recipes as part of that series, from Sunday dinner alternatives to roasts and chicken recipes if Sunday dinner means a chicken dinner to spicy Sunday dinner ideas if Sunday night is curry night.

Two of my favourites are Sunday dinner ideas that start with soup, bread and wine, food for the soul for challenging times, and easy Sunday dinner ideas if the state of the world has sapped your energy and enthusiasm, even for cooking.

Best Canned Beans Recipes for Budget Friendly Meals

Next on the list of our 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 is another recipe collection, a compilation of our best canned beans recipes for budget friendly meals if you’re feeling the pinch as a result of the cost of living crisis.

With food prices surging right around the world, billions of us are looking for more affordable food options to feed ourselves, our families and friends. One easy way to reduce the shopping bill is to reduce increasingly expensive meats and increase plant-based foods, such as beans.

Beans are easy, affordable and healthy. Kidney beans, chickpeas or garbanzo beans, and white beans such as butter beans and cannellini beans are super-foods, high in fiber and packed with plant-based proteins, vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, manganese and iron.

Our best canned bean recipes include our easy vegetarian chilli recipe, which makes a chilli con carne sin carne (without meat) using canned red kidney beans; a Turkish salad made with butter beans or cannellini beans; and a green minestrone soup recipe made with butter beans.

Authentic Beef Stroganoff Recipe for a Retro Classic

It’s no surprise to see my authentic beef Stroganoff recipe land on this list of our 10 most popular recipes of January 2023 as it’s been one of the most popular recipes on Grantourismo since I published it.

Best known as a retro classic of the 1970s, beef Stroganoff is an old aristocratic Russian dish that is rich in history. Democratised and popularised in the cafeterias of the Soviet Union, beef Stroganoff travelled the world with Russian émigrés, exiles and World War II refugees, including my Russian grandfather and Ukrainian grandmother.

One of my best Stroganoff recipes –  I also have recipes for chicken Stroganoff, mushroom Stroganoff, meatball Stroganoff and pork Stroganoff – beef Stroganoff is fantastic with traditional Russian accompaniments such as crispy shoestring fries, mashed potatoes or buckwheat kasha, a Russian garden salad on the side, homemade Russian dill pickles and sour cream.

Dishes are rarely eaten alone when a Russian-Ukrainian family gathers. For our Sunday meals and holiday feasts, baboushka would prepare a whole spread of dishes, such as borscht, piroshki, Russian pelmeni and Ukrainian vareniki, stuffed cabbage rolls, a beetroot potato salad, and chicken kotleti.

Best Chicken Stew Recipe for a Deeply Flavoured Old Fashioned Stew

Our best chicken stew recipe will make you a deeply flavoured chicken stew with melt-in-the-mouth chicken that falls off the bone, and it was another of our 10 most popular recipes of January 2023.

Subtle use of spices such as turmeric and paprika add earthiness and warmth, while using two types of potatoes – waxy and starchy – ensure some potato pieces remain firm while others break down, creating a thick comforting stew

You may well be asking who really needs another chicken stew recipe? You do, fellow stew lover, you do. And obviously thousands of our readers agreed.

After the success of our best canned beans recipes, I realised readers were keen for more budget friendly meal ideas, so I shared a selection of our best canned tomatoes recipes for more wallet friendly meals for these fiscally challenging times.

Cheap, convenient and easily as delicious as fresh tomatoes in many dishes, canned tomatoes are a pantry essential that can be used in everything from chillies and curries to chicken cacciatore and tagliatelle Bolognese

We usually have a handful of tinned tomatoes in the kitchen cupboard at any one time, including a mix of whole roma tomatoes, crushed tomatoes and tomato paste.

Our best canned tomatoes recipes included everything from our chicken cacciatore recipes to a classic Italian tomato sauce recipe for pasta, meatballs, pizza bases or parmas.

Lastly, this list of our 22 most popular chicken recipes of 2022 landed at #10 on our list of 10 most popular recipes of January 2023, or recipe posts, rather, and once again it included a mix of recipes and recipe collections, so I definitely won’t be doing the math on this.

Let’s just say you’ve got a lot more than 10 recipes here at your disposal and perhaps closer to hundreds. And, yes, we have been busy here in our Siem Reap kitchen, especially in the last few years.
