Our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021 were a real surprise. They included a handful of our Mexican recipes – both authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex – a few recipe compilations, including our best Mexican breakfast recipes, best mushroom recipes, and 85 picnic food recipes. I can’t wait to see what you read in November.

I’ve been compiling this month’s collection of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021 in a much better frame of mind than I was in last month, when we were in a hard lockdown here in Cambodia and hadn’t strayed far from our Siem Reap apartment in weeks.

Not only have travel restrictions since been eased, and cases have dropped to their lowest, but Cambodia is slowly re-opening to tourists, but we got vaccinated at last – after months of struggling to get our jabs after our last apartment complex was quarantined in July when a neighbour died of Covid. What a different a month makes.

Now all we need is to find a publisher or two for our Cambodia cookbook and Cambodia culinary history and life will be a whole lot better. So before I tell you about our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021, the recipes our readers searched for and spent most of their time this month, we have a favour to ask.

Now let me share our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021.

10 Most Popular Recipes of October 2021 – Here’s What Our Readers Have Been Cooking

Here are the 10 most popular recipes of October 2021 on Grantourismo – the recipes our readers searched for, spent time reading, and hopefully cooked this month.

10 Most Popular Recipes of October 2021

Best Mexican Breakfast Recipes from Huevos Rancheros to Mexican Migas with a Twist

Our best Mexican breakfast recipes post was the most-visited of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021. The round-up of Mexican recipes includes everything from an authentic huevos revueltos con chorizo recipe for scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage inspired by our favourite eggs dish in Mexico City at Café el Popular to our contemporary take on huevos rancheros and a Mexican migas recipe with a twist that we call a migas tortilla. If you made us choose a favourite nation of countries boasting the best breakfast eggs dishes in the world, without hesitation we’d pick Mexico for its huevos revueltos (scrambled eggs), huevos rancheros (‘ranch eggs’), and huevos Mexicana (scrambled eggs with some of Mexico’s most quintessential ingredients: serrano peppers, tomatoes and onions). Now if you made us pick a region, it would easily be Asia. If you haven’t yet checked our latest posts, we just published our best Asian breakfast recipes.

Best Breakfast Burrito Recipe with Scrambled Eggs, Shredded Chicken, Cheese and Pico de Gallo

Wow. It was incredible to see our best breakfast burrito recipe skyrocket to second place for the month in just a few days. It was this week’s recipe in our Weekend Eggs series on recipes for quintessential breakfast eggs dishes around the world, which we launched with Grantourismo well over a decade ago and re-booted earlier this year. When we thought we’d give you a break from breakfast tacos and breakfast banh mi, we had no idea how popular this breakfast burrito recipe would be. If you haven’t yet made it, please do. It makes a toasted burrito filled with creamy scrambled eggs, shredded chicken, gooey melted cheese, charred sweet corn, and zingy pico de gallo.

Mexican Huevos Rancheros Recipe with Mexican Chorizo for the Best Mexican Breakfast

This traditional Mexican huevos rancheros recipe with Mexican chorizo was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021. The recipe makes the classic Mexican ‘ranch eggs’, a breakfast staple in Mexico. A tomato salsa is enriched with soft spicy chorizo sausage and, combined with fried eggs with runny egg yolks laid on warm tortillas, makes a hearty flavourful Mexican breakfast dish. This classic Mexican huevos rancheros recipe was the traditional Mexican egg dish that inspired our contemporary-styled Mexican ‘ranch eggs’ recipe, which I made with a poached egg rather than fried eggs. That modern take on this traditional huevos rancheros recipe was conceived over a decade ago for our Weekend Eggs recipe series on quintessential breakfast eggs dishes around the world, and yet it still looks and feels contemporary and tastes just as delicious as this classic Mexican breakfast dish.

Mexican Quick Pickled Onions Recipe for Tangy Pink Onions to Brighten Your Tacos

This easy Mexican quick pickled onions recipe makes a zingy refrigerator pickle in the style of Mexico’s Yucatan pink onion pickles. It’s a perfect condiment, garnish or side for any number of Mexican dishes but particularly tacos, tostadas and tortas. It’s also very versatile as you can use red onions or purple shallots and adapt the seasoning to your taste. If you’ve made any of our Mexican breakfast recipes over the years, you would have noticed that we often use pink shallots or red onions, fresh or pickled. When they’re pickled, we’re using this easy Mexican quick pickled shallots recipe. We thought it was about time we shared it and were delighted that it was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021. If you like this, you should try our quick pickled red cabbage recipe.

The Cabbage Roll Soup Recipe That Probably Has My Baboushka Rolling In Her Grave

This cabbage roll soup recipe makes a comforting soup inspired by the Russian cabbage rolls called golubtsi (голубцы), filled with minced meat and rice and baked in a rich tomato sauce. It’s by no means an authentic Russian dish. My Russian grandmother did not make this, nor did my mother. In fact, my baboushka is probably rolling in her grave right now, but this cabbage roll soup is incredibly delicious, rich, and hearty. If you made and enjoyed my baboushka’s authentic Russian cabbage rolls, my cabbage soup recipe for shchi (Щи) or this traditional Russian soup called rassolnik, a hearty barley pickle soup with chicken and vegetables, which I make like a stew rather than the more common consommé-like consistency, then you’re probably going to love this cabbage roll soup recipe, as strange as it might sound. It was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021.

Our Best Mushroom Recipes Give You a Good Excuse to Go Mushroom Foraging

I don’t know about you, but we adore our mushrooms. One of the best meals of our lives was a massive single whole roasted mushroom at La Tavernetta in Camigliatello Silano in Calabria. As we cut into the enormous wild mushroom, juices gushed out and formed a pool on the plate. It was a revelation. We’ve been obsessed with cooking the best mushroom dishes ever since – perfect mushrooms on toast, creamy scrambled eggs with sautéed mushrooms, Russian mushroom Stroganoff, savoury buckwheat kasha with mushrooms, and our East-West bacon, eggs and mushrooms breakfast congee – so we were delighted that you enjoyed our best mushroom recipes so much that this compilation was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021.

Easy Vegetarian Chilli Recipe for Chilli Con Carne Sin Carne (Without Meat) and It’s Vegan Too

This easy vegetarian chilli recipe makes a chilli con carne sin carne (without meat) and it’s vegan if you eat it without dairy accompaniments such as sour cream and cheese. While this bean chilli is a cinch to make and comes together quickly, it’s full of so much flavour thanks to the spices that even meat-lovers won’t miss the beef mince. I was chuffed that it was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021, as it’s one of our taken-for-granted recipes. If we want a big ol’ bowl of chilli, then Terence makes his heavenly chilli con carne, which has a depth of flavour and complexity that my little ol’ vegetarian chilli, while still incredibly delicious, can’t match due to his use of a variety of chillies, bacon, beer, roasted dried spices, and multiple hours simmering on the stove. My vegan chilli usually gets relegated to a topping for my ultimate nachos so thank you to everyone who gave my veggie chilli recipe some love this month.

Burmese Potato Salad Recipe With Tamarind, Chilli, Fried Onion and Fragrant Mint

So wow, just wow, it was amazing to see this Burmese potato salad recipe published yesterday – yesterday! – get so many visitors that it became one of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021. This Burmese potato salad recipe makes a light potato salad with tamarind, chilli, fried onion, and fragrant mint. A kick of heat from the mild green chillies, a little sweetness and sourness from the tamarind juice, crunch from the fried shallots, and the perfume of fresh mint make this one of the best Burmese salads to accompany your curries. It’s another Burmese recipe I’ve adapted from my favourite Burmese cookbook, Mi Mi Khaing’s Cook and Entertain the Burmese Way, published in 1978, to draw attention to the heartbreaking situation in Myanmar and direct readers to organisations in Myanmar that need your support, so I’m thrilled so many of you are seeing this recipe and hoping you’re clicking through. Myanmar desperately needs support.

Thai Pad Kra Pao Recipe for Stir Fried Ground Pork and Holy Basil with Fried Egg

This Thai pad kra pao recipe for stir fried pork and holy basil with fried egg is a breakfast staple of street food stalls all over Thailand. A paste of chilli and garlic is combined with ground pork, a rich sauce and holy basil. Topped with a fried egg and served with prik nam pla and jasmine rice, it’s a filling breakfast dish and a Thai street food favourite with Thais (in contrast to pad Thai which is a favourite of tourists), and it’s one of our favourite Thai dishes too, so we’re pleased that this recipe got so much eyes this month and was another of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021.

85 Picnic Food Ideas from Frittatas and Fried Chicken to Chilled Soups and Spring Rolls

Well, it was no surprise that our post on our best picnic food ideas was one of our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021. It’s picnic season after all – spring in the southern hemisphere and autumn or fall in the northern hemisphere. Our best picnic food ideas cover the gamut of picnic staples, including picnic dips, crackers, breads, frittatas, salads, fried and roast chicken. But we’ve also got loads of picnic food ideas that you might not have thought of including recipes for homemade condiments and pickles and easy picnic foods such as soups, finger food and savoury pastries, along with Southeast Asian style spring rolls, Vietnamese banh mi, and pies and sausage rolls with a twist.

Please do let us know in the comments below if you’ve cooked any of the recipes in our 10 most popular recipes of October 2021 as we’d love to get your feedback.
