Mauerpark (Wall Park) is a public space created along a section where the Berlin Wall once stood in Prenzlauer Berg, just a block from our apartment. The Mauerpark Sunday Flea Market (flohmarkt) follows the line of the former wall.

Despite the freezing temperatures and the melting snow that was turning to ice and slush, the whole of Berlin seemed to be out visit the Mauerpark Sunday Flea Market when we dropped by.

Families were pulling little kids up the hill so they could slide right down on their sleds again. Groups of friends were strolling along the large snowy expanse of the park, still littered with empty champagne bottles and fireworks from New Year’s Eve.

The market itself was packed with hip locals, Berliners who’d come from all over the city, expats, and travellers, browsing the stalls for second hand books and vinyl records, musical instruments, vintage clothes and accessories, retro furniture, bric-a-brac and knick-knacks, Soviet memorabilia, clothes from Asia, and handicrafts from South America.

The handful of food and drink stalls, selling everything from beer and gluhwein to currywurst and doner kebabs, were doing a roaring trade with chilly locals eager to warm up. We were feeling the cold too, so we slipped along the sidewalks that seemed to quickly be turning to ice-skating rinks, to our home on nearby Oderberger Straße.
