This super-simple avocado smoothie recipe has been on repeat in our kitchen here in Siem Reap. I bought a few kilos of fantastic avocados from farmers in Ratanikiri province in eastern Cambodia – along with their wonderfully crunchy cashews – and although I’m meant to be testing avocado recipes, I can’t stop making these creamy avocado shakes.

Avocado Smoothie Recipe for a Sip of Southeast Asia At Home
Prior to the pandemic, I’d often stop to buy a creamy avocado smoothie – for all of US$1! – from one of the ladies from the long row of juice carts that ran beside Psar Chas or Old Market in the heart of Siem Reap’s historic quarter.
Soon after the world shut down last March, Cambodia closed its borders to tourists, and we all began staying at home, the juice sellers packed up their carts and went home too. No doubt they’re parked in their yards, waiting for the day that travellers return.
While the juice carts have long gone, my memories of the creamy avocado smoothies I used to buy from one particular seller have not. If you’ve sipped avocado shakes in Siem Reap before, tell me whether this doesn’t taste nearly as good, and if it took you right back to your holiday.

Tips to Making this Easy Avocado Smoothie Recipe
This easy avocado smoothie recipe is a cinch to make. It calls for just four ingredients and takes no more than five minutes to whip up. The result is an incredibly creamy avocado shake that is filling and healthy. If you’ve had avocado smoothies in Siem Reap or anywhere in Southeast Asia – or for that matter, South America – you can travel with your taste buds when you take a sip of the tropics at home.
The only ingredients you need to make this avocado smoothie recipe are two avocados (around 300 g each), cold milk (300 ml of milk if you’re making two large avocado shakes or four small avo smoothies), a couple of tablespoons of sugar for sweetness (or any sugar or sweetener of your choosing), and a little salt to bring out the flavour of the avocados and provide balance and contrast.
To make this easy avocado smoothie recipe all you need to do is cut the avocados in half, remove the avocado pits and any remnants of shell from the seed that might still be clinging to the flesh. Use a tablespoon to scoop the avocado flesh out of its skin and into your blender, then add the cold milk, sugar and salt, and blend for a couple of minutes until smooth, and you’re done!
Pour the thick creamy avocado shake into tall chilled glasses if making drinks for two – or four smaller glasses. Or just double the ingredients. If your avocado smoothie isn’t cold enough, add a couple of ice cubes to each glass and use long spoons to stir to chill. Then tell me if that doesn’t take you back.

I think I bought the same avocadoes you did :) I’m missing those ladies too :( These turned out so well, Lara. I added a little leftover condensed milk – my partner is Cambodian we always have it in the fridge – and it was sweet, but it was very delish. Clinking glasses – to tourists returning and the juice ladies returning with them!
They’re good, right?! I’ve just ordered more! I think there are a couple of juice ladies on the riverside where the street food stalls have proliferated, from the area opposite Sister Srey cafe up toward the pagoda/bridge, but we’ve been social distancing so haven’t got too close to look to see if it’s the same ladies. Sadly, I’ve seen a few of their abandoned carts outside the Art Market. We always seem to have condensed milk in the fridge too :) And, yes, here’s to tourists returning and with them the little businesses we love so much! Thanks for taking the time to drop by and leave a comment x
