The garden at our trullo near Aborobello in Puglia in Southern Italy is our own personal pleasure garden with plenty to entertain. The scent of fresh rosemary, laurel and mint, followed up by the fragrant notes of the flowers, some beautiful crimson and musk roses, permeates the place.
But what has really made this springtime scene complete (in between the frequent rain showers!) has been the bees busy earning their keep, the bugs feasting on their aromatic sweets, and the lizards always keen for a little sun…
These garden images were taken with my trusty Nikon D700. No surprises there! However you might be surprised to know that the lens I mainly used was my AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED. This is a long lens made for activities such as sport.
I used this for the bees and bugs mainly, so they could go about their business without me scaring them off. It wasn’t easy to get great shots wielding this lens, but over our stay I did manage to get a few keepers.
For the flowers I mainly used my Nikon Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 which is pin-sharp at f/2.8. I shot mainly at ISO 800 so that I had a reasonably fast shutter speed and there often was a little breeze around — that makes macro photography very hard!
