Grantourismo Christmas Stocking Travel Giveaway

A Christmas Tree in Vienna, Austria – with real snow!

In the spirit of giving, and with the help of some of our friends, we’re running a Grantourismo Christmas Stocking Travel Giveaway, starting now and ending on Christmas Eve.

We don’t have a Christmas stocking as such for you, but what we do have are some fantastic travel-themed stocking stuffers, valued at over US$1500 – all of which will go to one lucky winner.

Here’s what we have:

And… consider this one a little something extra that was hidden under the tree. But, sadly, it’s only for one Australian reader only who will be randomly selected after the main draw, so please let us know in your comment if you’re Australian.

  • 1 travel insurance voucher from our Australian travel insurance partners InsureandGo to the value of A$100

So how do you go in the running to win this wonderful bundle of Christmas travel joy? All you have to do is leave us a comment below. You can say anything really. Why not just tell us where you’ll be spending Christmas? The winner will be chosen randomly using www.randompicker.com and announced on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas xx

In a nutshell:

  • Leave a Comment below so we have your name and email.
  • This giveaway is open to everyone over 25 years.
  • To go in the running for the main ‘stocking’, entrants can live anywhere in the world.
  • To go in the running for the bonus travel insurance prize, entrants must be Australian residents so please identify yourself as Australian in the comments.
  • The winners of both the main ‘stocking’ and ‘bonus prize’ will be selected randomly in two draws.
  • The giveaway ends 6pm on 24 December.
  • Winners will be announced soon after.

UPDATE 30/12/12: WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas! Apologies for taking so long to announce the winners of this contest. Putting names into a hat is a lot easier than using those random winner generators. So (drum roll), the winners of our Xmas prizes are…
* Paula Heelan – who wins the Xmas travel stocking, including all the juicy travel prizes above, and…
* Sam of foodtravelbliss.com - who gets the $100 InsureandGo travel insurance voucher.

Congrats! We’ll be emailing you both to connect you with the prize sponsors. Thanks to everyone who dropped by to enter. We’ve got some more travel and food themed contests coming up in 2013. A sincere thank you to all of our sponsors above for generously donating such fabulous prizes!

What a lovely bunch of travel-minded gifts. :)

    1. Lara Dunston

Nice, aren’t they? I’d be happy with that lovely selection of books Harper Collins Australia and ABC Books are giving away actually. Sigh. My idea of heaven. A pile of books and no laptop in sight.

  2. Timothy Wirjo Pawiro

I am going to spend my Christmas with my parents and family in Semarang, Central Java – Indonesia. We live separately after my dad decided to move to Semarang after he retired, so it’s exciting to visit them again during Christmas day and of course New Year!!

Thanks for having this competition, and hopefully I will win! ;)

Merry Christmas, Lara and Terence! :)

    1. Lara Dunston

Oh, we’ve never been to Java! We’ve only been to Bali. But before you accuse us of being typical Australians, we only went for the first time 2 years ago :) Java is on the list.

Enjoy your time with your family!

  3. Ulrike

Thanks for the competition – and Merry Christmas. What I’ll be doing? Christmas in Melbourne with friends from Dubai, and NY’s eve in Sydney. Have a good one!

    1. Lara Dunston

Melbourne – or Bendigo, 2 hours north – is where we often spend Xmas with family. We’ll be in Hanoi this year. We were meant to be settling into our new home in Cambodia, spending ‘winter’ by the beach, but we’ve become smitten with Hanoi/Vietnam so extended visa by 3 months.

I have lots of fond memories of NYE on Sydney Harbour, from childhood through to when Terry and I lived in nearby Potts Point. Definitely the most spectacular fireworks in the world. You’ll love it! Enjoy!

  4. Rachel

A very happy Christmas and good luck in this great giveaway to all.

    1. Lara Dunston

Hope you have a happy one too, Rachel!

  5. Mike

What a great list of must haves! Sign me up!

    1. Lara Dunston

You’re on the list! Good luck!

  6. Stephen Schwer

May peace loving mung beans be yours, and may a prize package be mine!!! :)

    1. Lara Dunston

LOL, if I hadn’t decided to use that randompicker tool and was deciding winners on comments, you’d win, Stephen!

  7. Lisa Schwer

Oh please oh please oh please!!!

    1. Lara Dunston

      LOL, good luck!

  8. Ellen Funk

Spending Christmas at home with our 7 mo old granddaughter. Cant wait to take her travelling with us. I see Christmas in Budapest in a few years!

    1. Lara Dunston

Lovely! We spent Christmas in Poland (in Zakopane and Krakow) in 2010 and were in Budapest (along with Vienna and Zell am See) just before Christmas. Nothing beats that part of the world for Christmas. The Xmas markets and mulled wine alone makes it worthwhile. Have a merry one!

  9. Ian [EagerExistence]

I’m spending Xmas at my Dad’s beach-house on the West Coast of Australia with family (including kids this year).

*Australian resident, and all-round awesome guy.

    Merry Christmas guys.

    1. Lara Dunston

Where will you be? Love WA! Mum and my sister and her husband and kids live in Perth, and Terry and I have spent months at a time on the road in WA over the years updating guidebooks. Just love it – the Kimberley, the Pilbara, Margaret River, the Great Southern – all fabulous!

  10. Adrianne

Me, me, me!! Pick me!! : )
I’ll be sleeping and watching television and enjoying the closed up world.

    1. Lara Dunston

Sigh. I’m dreaming of spending Christmas Day eating, sleeping and watching movies – the beauty of spending it alone with your other-half. No pressue to do *anything*. Though will miss seeing family and friends. Enjoy!

  11. Rebecca

Merry Christmas, Lara and Terrence. And what an amazing giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity.
I’ll be spending Christmas in Chiang Mai with my husband, and probably skyping with our respective families. How about you?
    PS: I’m Australian, too ;)

    1. Lara Dunston

Hey Becca – enjoy Christmas in Chiang Mai! We’re spending it in Hanoi – spontaneously rented an apartment for a month. It wasn’t the plan at all, but loving it here. Good luck!

  12. Wendy Miller

We’ll be spending Christmas in Budapest & New Years in Vienna, can not wait!

    1. Lara Dunston

You’re going to love it! Two of our favourite Xmas/winter destinations. Have fun!

  13. Sian Edwards

Is it sad I’m excited by the extra iPhone battery? I’m addicted to (over)sharing my food and travel experiences with everyone so that would be so handy!

This year all my Aussie family are meeting at my brother’s home in the Blue Mountains, Sydney for drinks, food and hopefully if the weather plays nice a dip in his swimming pool.

    2013 goal: start my foodie/travel blog! :P

    1. Lara Dunston

The iPhone batteries are brilliant. We use them all the time. We reviewed them here: http://grantourismotravels.com/2012/08/01/sinoele-iphone-power-station/

Ah, Blue Mountains… just lovely… and Sydney in the summertime – aside from the Mediterranean, there are few better places in the world to spend summer than in Sydney… the beaches, the harbour, I even get excited by the smell of the bitumen heating up in steamy suburbs. Enjoy!

Do come back and visit and let us know when your blog is up!

  14. Sheila

Christmas in Bay Village, Ohio but off to Arctic Circle in Feb!

    1. Lara Dunston

Arctic Circle – how exciting! Have a wonderful Christmas!

  15. Tony

I’ll be spending Xmas with family here in Adelaide, Australia. Lots of yummy food to be consumed over multiple days, followed by recovery day on Boxing Day in front of the TV watching the cricket test match from Melbourne.

Hope you guys have a fantastic Xmas :-)

    1. Lara Dunston

Love Adelaide! One of my favourite and one of Australia’s most underrated cities. I’ve always said the world needs to know about Adelaide – although maybe you prefer it’s kept a secret down there? You’re making me miss Australia now. A hugely indulgent Christmas day with way too much wonderful food and drink and the fab company of family and friends followed by an utterly lazy Boxing Day with the cricket on the tele is Aussie seasonal bliss. Enjoy! We’ll see if we can find the cricket on the tele here in Hanoi ;)

  16. Jeanette

Lovely prizes! Would love to win something since I’ll be on my own in France for Christmas!

    1. Lara Dunston

Ah, such a shame we weren’t running it earlier – and we weren’t judging on Comments alone! I would have sent you that package of fab HarperCollins & ABC Books to keep you company! :)

  17. Christie

    What a great giveaway.

We are spending Christmas in Melbourne with family, we are yet to do a Christmas away from home- maybe next year?

    1. Lara Dunston

Lovely! You can always take the family with you next year? :)

  18. Karen Bryan

I’ll be at home in Berwick upon Tweed in the UK with my husband and our 25 year old twin sons. I’d prefer to be somewhere warm and sunny but the Scot in me refuses to pay the peak season prices.

    1. Lara Dunston

Hello Karen! It’s been a while… but I remember our meeting at the blogger drinks in chilly Edinburgh with white wine in hand just like yesterday. Nice! And your Christmas sounds just lovely! But I didn’t know you had twins!!! Merry Christmas xx

  19. Kim moore

Merry Xmas great prize. i shall spend xmas with my family in Norah Head NSW we are in caravans, enjoying the Aussie sun, surf, sand and great outdoors.

    1. Lara Dunston

Lovely! Caravans by the sea! That’s how we spent lots of Aussie summer holidays. Jealous. Enjoy!

  20. Lisa @chickybus

I’ll be spending Christmas with my family in New Jersey. Looking forward to traveling in 2013, of course! Where to–not sure yet. Would one of the prizes on your list help? Certainly! :)

    1. Lara Dunston

Ha! Ha! That week’s car rental might, I hope. They’d been offering it to us for ages, but we just have no need for it in SEAsia, so thought one of our readers might be able to use it. Whoever gets it, we’ll be happy. Best of luck then! Have a lovely Xmas with the family, Lisa.

  21. Natalie T.

I love your contests! This prize would be useful because I’m going to New York AND Chicago next year! As for Christmas, I’m homebound in Toronto. My Mom LOVES Christmas and basically would never want me to leave home on the holidays. She’s so emotional! That said, I can’t ever promise her that. There’s too much world to see. Next year, I’m thinking of a big trip. What would choose: Buenos Aires or Cape Town. 2 weeks to a month in either destination. Would love to hear your thoughts since you’ve been to both destinations.

    1. Lara Dunston

You could always take your Mum with you?

I’d opt for Buenos Aires. Rent an apartment. We really like Cape Town too, but we absolutely adore Buenos Aires. Almost bought an apartment there some years ago, and regretting we didn’t now.

      Enjoy Christmas in Toronto!

  22. Jac

I’m currently in the UAE and will be in Munich till Xmas eve so I’m quite happy to be home with the family this Christmas (and these prizes would be a fabulous gift! =)

    1. Lara Dunston

Ah, we had so many Christmases in the UAE – 7 in fact! – not all that fun, especially if we had to work, though we’d often have friends over for dinner that night. Munich is a favourite city of ours and wonderful in winter. Enjoy!

  23. Jeff

Merry Christmas where ever you are this year. For us it is home for the holidays with great anticipation for travel in 2013 and beyond.

    1. Lara Dunston

We’re in Hanoi, where are you? Have a wonderful Christmas!

  24. Nick Seruwagi

Hi Lara, and the GT travel competition sponsors.
So this Christmas I will be having dinner on Christmas Eve with a few friends. Why not on Christmas day you ask, well basically I was planning to travel home to London for Christmas. It was only till really late my boss decided to cancel my trip due to “work load”… *sigh*. As a result I was too late to be included in the festive plans with my friends and now I will be at home, hugging my turkey and watching home alone movies!
So rather than dwell on the sad story I thought why not enter this competition and have something to look forward too, and explore my imagination of all the in thing I could do if I win….
    1. Indulge in the books to plan my next destination – yes I am one of those people that read then from cover to cover.
    2. Make sure I plan a quick skiing lesson – I’m African so it will be fun to recreate the “cool runnings” movie on ski’s
    3. Make sure I end the trip with two night at a luxury roomorama location :)

    1. Lara Dunston

Hi Nick – might want to pop the turkey in the oven instead! Sad to hear you can’t make it home from Christmas but sounds like you’ve got a great alternative plan there! If we were deciding the winner on creativity alone, you would most definitely win. Let’s hope Randompicker loves your response as much as we do. Though sadly, if he (it?) does we won’t get the prize there for Xmas. Spending New Year alone too? ;)

  25. Michael Lee Johnson

Hey Guys – Michael Lee Johnson here.

Christmas? Good question. This year I will be spending Christmas with my family as it may be the last Christmas I will ever spend with them.

My walk from Beijing to London may be the death of me… Dependent up on the route I take of course. However, I am not scared of dying, I am scared of not living, and I have been sat behind a computer for far too long…So it’s time I start living!

Those Books from harper colins will go down a treat when I win. :)

Have a great day, week, month, year. LIFE! Happy traveling guys.

    1. Lara Dunston

Hi Michael – wow, what a trip! Those books are going to be way too heavy for you to carry! We need to hold another competition for you and get you a kindle or iPad. Let’s talk about this trip of yours some more one day. We’ll be eagerly following your journey. Nice to connect on Twitter too :)

  26. Filipe José Carvalho

Count me in!! Cheers from the #Douro Valley, in Portugal!! I hope to (re)meet you again, somewhere in the world!

    1. Lara Dunston

Hey Filipe! You’re in! How is the Douro at the moment? Starting to get chilly? We hope to meet you again too some place :)

  27. Sontag

  30. Paula Heelan

    Hi Lara
Leaving my name in your comments box – from Iguana freelancers facebook.
Thanks – and Merry Xmas to you and a great new year.

    Paula Heelan

    1. Lara Dunston

      Got it! Thanks, Paula.

(And I’ll just note here for our records that you’re an Aussie – as the Aussies go into an additional draw on randompicker for that insurance voucher.)

  31. Christine (Food Wine Travel)

    1. Lara Dunston

Why thank you. Best of luck!

    Merry Christmas
    Sam

    p.s. I’m Australian :)

    1. Lara Dunston

Hi Sam – thanks! No chimney here in Hanoi, so I can confidently say that unless Santa is going to use the elevator, probably not. He does still use chimneys right? :)

  33. David Whitley

Well, that car hire sounds handy…

    1. Lara Dunston

I know. Wish we could have accepted it ourselves; just don’t have a need for a car here in Hanoi. Good luck!

  34. Louise

Yay! Being Australian, I’m going to bet that my Christmas will be spent alternating between the air conditioning and the pool

    1. Lara Dunston

Hi Louise – sounds lovely! Enjoy!

  35. Sally Hammond

    Hi Lara,
What a lovely goody bag you’ve assembled! Let’s hope that we finally get to meet face-to-face in 2013 if you happen to be in Australia again. (yet I’m Australian)
All the very best for a lovely Christmas and New Year,
    Sally

    1. Lara Dunston

Thanks! That would be lovely. Being Australian, we have been returning for Christmases in recent years to see family and friends, but won’t get back this year. Will be back at some stage in ’13 so would be lovely to meet. Have a good one!

  36. Scott

Thanks, Reynold. Christmas in New York! Ugh, the wind chill factor is all I think of when I think about New York now. I think I went into shock the first time we went there many years ago, just after New Year. Um, enjoy! Best of luck.

    1. Lara Dunston

Sounds like bliss! On our places to go list for 2013. Best of luck!

  40. Fiona Harper

Hi Lara what a lovely Christmas giveaway! Like Winsor I’ll be at home too & looking forward to it Hope yours is fabulous where you & Terry find yourself…

    1. Lara Dunston

    1. Lara Dunston

Hey Fazmoon – well, hopefully we’ll make a couple of people happy. We haven’t been to Trinidad and Tobago yet but we’d love to get there some day. Had the opportunity a few years ago to go – in hurricane season! – so we postponed. That sorrel drink sounds interesting. Good luck!

  46. Sandrine

    Hello world travelers
In the spirit of my very dynamic and unique friend met years ago in a cafe of San Telmo, I will have an international Christmas Eve dinner at my house, surrounded by other uprooted people, from New Zealand to Pakistan. And Christmas day at the Korean spa!
    Merry Christmas to you

    1. Lara Dunston

      Hola amiga!
Que pasa?! I’ll never forget that day in San Telmo. We need to blog about that, don’t we? It shows how a fleeting moment in time can lead to a long distance friendship that will last a lifetime. Let’s not reveal how many years ago that was, though! Ouch! Hope each of your friends are bringing a Xmas dish from their own country. That would be fun!
      Feliz Navidad! Joyeux Noël!
      Muchos besos xx

  47. nellbe

Fantastic prizes and even more so being an Aussie resident :) Not travelling far from home this Christmas, in Melbourne with family but it’s a dream to spend it with American relatives one year – soon hopefully!

    1. Lara Dunston

Thanks! Well, Bendigo is where we’ve been spending Xmas in recent years with family. Though this year it’s a chilly Hanoi. Have a lovely one!

  48. Glenda Booth

Oh how I would love to be relaxing on a tropical beach reading that great selection of books, then I could drive somewhere and see the sights,do some souvenir shopping and eat at some lovely local restaurant! Fabulous prize and I am so tired and need a break!

    1. Lara Dunston

Glenda, so would I right now, so would I. You and me both. Hoping you get to relax and rejuvenate over Christmas. Best of luck!

  49. Erica

Hanoi sounds like an interesting Christmas experience! I’m spending the holiday with my parents and sister in a wintry Sweden.

These regular giveaways are so generous of you and your travel partners.

    1. Lara Dunston

Thanks, Erica. Much appreciated. Hanoi is fascinating. Looking forward to seeing what happens here over the next couple of days. Must get back to Sweden one day. Have a lovely time with your family!

  50. Lauren A

    Hi Lara,

I’m spending Christmas at home in North Qld (Aussie resident!), with all the family coming over for lunch, but I’ll be dreaming of a white Christmas….

    1. Lara Dunston

Hi Lauren – Christmas in the sunshine in Queensland sounds divine from where I’m sitting, looking out at a foggy, grey Hanoi sky. Having spent a white Christmas in Europe a few times, though, they are pretty special. Enjoy!

  51. Maxine Sheppard

Happy Christmas you two. I’ll be at home for the first time in three years. Going to treat myself to the day off, and maybe the next day too!

    1. Lara Dunston

Hey there! We’re planning to take a couple of days off too. Can’t wait! Have a very Merry Christmas x

  52. Marcy Gordon

    Hey L&T –
Happy Holidays. I’ll be spending Christmas in California wine country. As usual your prize giveaways are quite deluxe –but it would be nice if a designated driver was included as part of the car rental. ;-) Hope our paths cross in the New Year.
    Cheers–
    M

    1. Lara Dunston

      Hi MG!
‘Happy Holidays’ – you Americans ;) Have a few glasses or six for us, won’t you? We’ll work on getting a driver next year. We *must* meet next year. I still have an Indian wine trip pencilled in, so we need to get Aneesh onto that. Pre-/post-trip in some grand old Maharaja’s palace somewhere?
      Hugs,
      L+T xx

  53. Carl

Love Milan – spent a lot of time there over the years, mainly writing guidebooks to Milan, the Italian Lakes, Northern Italy – once rented an apartment on the Naviglio, our favourite part of the city. Let us know if you need tips. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve, which is the equivalent to Christmas Day, is what I’ll be drinking some sherry on, given that I’m in Argentina…
And Christmas Day will involve a leftovers brunch with my best friend who just moved into our building, and it will be poolside… until I have to go to work…
And Boxing Day, well who knows. More pool action! Followed by more work!
    Feliz navidad to you both!
